The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, office Skopje, the Progress Institute for Social Democracy, Olof Palme International Centar and SOLIDAR organized a public debate upon the analysis “Decent Work in Republic of Macedonia”. The debate was held on 21.11.2011 in the GEM Club Skopje.
The purpose of this case study is to identify the key hurdles that are preventing the majority of workers in the Republic of Macedonia from having decent work conditions.
The analysis is based on three groups of factors: the systematic factors including imbalances in the labor market, low salary levels and associated poverty, large shadow economy and not self-sustainable Pension and disability insurance fund and Health insurance fund; the key institutional constraints such as politicization of institutions, and marginalization and politicization of trade unions; and legislative weaknesses.
This analysis is based on a research done in the framework of the regional project “Decent Work Balkan Network – Putting Equality and Solidarity at the heart of the EU
integration” financed by the European Commission. The project isimplemented in Macedonia by the Progress Institute, the Olof Palme International Center and SOLIDAR. Cvetanka Ivanova, MP and President of the Committee for labour and social policy within the Macedonian Assembly has an opening remarks towards the topic, followed by detailed presentation of the case study done by the author Dr. Dragan Tevdovski. Professional inputs and personal standpoint toward the elaborated topic were given by: Mile Boshkov, executive director of Business confederation of Macedonia and Mila Caroska, member of the executive board of the Macedonian platform for fight against poverty.
